Hard-Bread Sandwiches: Who Likes Them??

There's a pretty big chain of bakery/sandwich stores in San Francisco called Boudin Bakery. They bill themselves as the Bay Area's best bakery. But the sandwiches that they make feature bread that is hard as nails. It is a real workout just to chomp off a bite, and then chewing it will eventually tire your jaw more than gnawing on a jawbreaker. It wouldn't even say that it tastes very good, but I can't tell since I'm expending so much energy just chewing.

What I want to know is, who the heck likes this type of bread? I know that it's a style of making bread, like how some people like to bake potatoes and others like to boil them. But honestly, who likes working this hard just to eat bread?

Personally, I like bread that is very crispy on the outside, but extremely soft on the inside. Say, toasted bread from a simple place like Quizno's, or Focaccia Bakery. Simple always ends up being better, doesn't it?
